The 2009 Barbados International Fishing tournament was a big success, and saw a total of 31 boats and 210 anglers participated in the 20 annual edition of the event, with some spectacular catches being recorded as the teams reveled in the magnificent conditions. There were a total of 30 Billfish caught and released, (27 Blue Marlin, 1 Sailfish and 2 Spearfish), and plenty of Wahoo and Dolphin landed which mostly went to local orphans’ homes and charities, as well as kept the anglers well fed during the tournament. The new club record for Blue Marlin that was set last year by Frank Armstrong at 507 lbs after having stood for 31 years was almost eclipsed by local angler Ricardo Roach with a 495 lb Blue Marlin landed in pursuit of the local record. There was non stop action from the Bimini start to the close of the scales, when on the last day the lead changed 5 times before the winning boat Hard Play II landed a Blue Marlin with 5 minutes left. Sponsored mainly by Mount Gay Rum, Digicel and Sagicor Life, the tournament attracted teams from around the Southern Caribbean Billfish Circuit as well as internationally, and owes a great debt to all its sponsors. The Barbados Game Fishing Association’s will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary, and the tournament will be from March 27th to 30th 2010 with big things are planned for the beautiful Port St. Charles Marina.
We look forward to seeing you in Barbados this year.
